The cinematic future of Star Wars has been something of a mystery, with several different projects being reported under development. The only proposed movie to get in front of cameras so far has been The Mandalorian spinoff, The Mandalorian And Grogu from director Jon Favreau, which is set for release in May 2026.
But that mystery is clearing up a bit as just moments ago at Star Wars Celebration Japan, it was announced that the next big screen Star Wars production would be the project that had been under development from Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. Titled Star Wars: Starfighter, the film is also now confirmed to star Ryan Gosling and will begin production this fall for a May 28, 2027 release. Levy had been working n the project since 2022.
Levy has reportedly stated from the show that the film will be a standalone feature, not the beginning of a new trolgy, and that it will take place approximately five years after Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise Of Skywalker.
A report earlier this week stated that an offer went out to newly minted Academy Award winner Mickey Madison to co-star in the film, but she had declined. Presumably the casting for Starfighter is ongoing.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also confirmed on stage before the crowd that other previously reported on projects from directors James Mangold (The Dawn Of The Jedi), Simon Kinberg, Dave Filoni, Sharmeen obaid-chinoy (New Jedi Order), Taika Waititi are all still in development. Conspicuously absent from that list is director Patty Jenkins’s on-again off-again in development project Rogue Squadron.
