Warners Developing GAME OF THRONES Feature Film

Warner Brothers is looking to expand the borders of Westeros.

The Hollywood Reporter is stating that the studio is currently developing a big screen feature film for their Game Of Thrones franchise. The trade states that the studio is in very early days of exploring the idea an no director, writer or cast has been attached to the unnamed project. Additionally, there is no word as to what time period in the fantasy world that the story would be set.

Understandably, the trade states that Warners is looking to cinemas as a possible way to expand the franchise beyond the main series and its one spinoff, House Of Dragons, that are available on the studio’s Max streaming service. Ironically, the original show’s showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, had pitched HBO and Warner Brothers ending the series with a series of three feature-length films instead of the final season of episodes that the studio requested.

An adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, Game Of Thrones premiered on HBO in 2011 and was an instant hit for the cable outlet. The series ran for eight seasons, wrapping up in 2019.

Warner Brothers/HBO have been fairly aggressive in developing the Game Of Thrones franchise following the end of the main series in 2019, putting a number of different projects, both live action and animated, into development. Only three have moved forward enough to get in front of cameras. The first, Bloodmoon starring Naomi Watts and set some 10,000 years before the events of the main series, only produced a pilot episode with the cable outlet electing not to order to series. The second project, House Of The Dragon, just finished airing its second of an announced four season run. The most reason is A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s Tales Of Dunk And Egg novellas and is set to premier at some point next year. This new potential film is the first reported theatrical project that the studio is exploring.
