Director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the pack of this year’s films nominated for this year’s Academy Awards with nods in 13 out of the 23 awards categories. The look at the man who developed the atomic bomb was named as a finalist for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr, Best Adapted Screenplay and eight other categories.
The nominees were announced this morning in Los Angeles.
Poor Things, from director Yorgos Lanthimos, secured eleven nominations, including Picture, Director, Lead Actress for Emma Stone, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Adapted Screenplay while Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon received ten nominations including Director, Picture, Supporting Actor for Robert DeNiro and Lead Actress for Lily Gladstone.
With her nomination, Gladstone becomes first ever Native woman of American descent to be nominated in the Lead Actress category
Marin Scorsese’s nomination for directing Killers Of The Flower Moon is his tenth nomination in the Best Director, passing the record nine nominations he and Steven Spielberg had been previously tied at. His only win out of those previous nominations was for 2006’s The Departed.
Barbie, the summer blockbuster based on the popular toy line, earned eight nominations including Best Picture, Supporting Actor and Actress for America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling, and Adapted Screenplay. It was also nominated twice in the Best Song category for “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”
The other films nominated in the Best Picture category including American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall and The Holdovers, all with with five nominations in total each, Maestro with seven nominations total and The Zone of Interest with four.
The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 10.
