Reese Witherspoon is returning to one of her earliest iconic characters as Paramount is announcing Tracy Flick Can’t Win, a sequel to 1999’s Election, which will be going to their streaming service Paramount+.

Based on the novel Election by Tom Perrotta, Reese starred as an ambitious high school student, determined to win the student council presidency while her teacher (Matthew Broderick) looked on with growing concern at her ambition. According to the Hollywood Reporter, in the sequel, also based on a recently published tome from Perrotta, we will find Tracy as “a hardworking assistant principal at a public high school in suburban New Jersey and still struggling to fight her way to the top.”

Writer/director Alexander Payne, who adapted Election back in the 1990s into the film which helped launch his career, is returning to write and direct this follow up.
