Amandla Stenberg will be headlining the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte.
Variety is reporting that the The Hate U Give and Dear Evan Hansen star is currently in negotiations to star in the series, which will be the first set outside of the main timeline of all the previous the Star Wars films and television shows.
As revealed last December, during Disney’s Investors Day presentation, The Acolyte is set during the newly unveiled High Republic Era, a time several hundred years before the Fall of the Galactic Republic and rise of the evil Galactic Empire as seen in the Star Wars prequel trilogy films. Although a general time of peace, the show will be “mystery thriller that will take us into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the waning days of the High Republic Era.”
The High Republic Era storytelling initiative was launched earlier this year in a series of novels and comics aimed at both adult and younger readers. The Acolyte would be the first live action story set in the timeframe.
While no further story details have been released, in Star Wars lore an acolyte is usually a Sith who begins their training in the DarkSide of the Force under a Sith Lord.
No further information as to when the show is scheduled to begin production has been announced.
