Cobie Smulders is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reprising her role of SHIELD agent Maria Hill for the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
She’ll be rejoining her frequent MCU co-star Samuel L Jackson, who is headlining the show as SHIELD commander Nick Fury. Captain Marvel‘s Ben Mendelsohn is the other MCU veteran returning for the series, reprising his role as Skrull Talos. Newcomers to the franchise include Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald and Killian Scott.
Although not entirely beholden to the comics story, the 2008 Secret Invasion comics event story 2008 revealed that many of the heroes of the Marvel Universe were replaced by Skrulls over the span of several years as part of a long-term prelude to a more overt invasion.
Smulders participation in the series was at least presumed by MCU fans. Her character was last seen in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home working with Fury, with the two forcing Spider-Man to help them with a certain issue while young Peter Parker is on a class trip in Europe. Well, sort of. In that film’s post-credit scene, it was revealed that the Fury and Hill we saw throughout the film were actually two shape-changing Skrull aliens. They were standing in at Fury’s direction while it appeared that he was off on a mission with a spaceship full of Skrulls. It was seen as a suggestion that a version of the Secret Invasion event was in the future and if Nick Fury was going to be involved, his right-hand-woman Maria Hill couldn’t be too far behind.
Secret Invasion began production this past September with an expected air date in late 2022.
