The next installment of the Predator franchise will arrive next summer on the streamer Hulu and be titled Prey.
The news comes as part of a number of announcements Disney is making on their promotional Disney+ Day event. Disney acquired the Predator franchise as one of the IP assets when it bout20th Century Fox in 2019.
10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is behind the camera for this installment, telling the story of a female Comanche Nation warrior played by Amber Midthunder fighting to protect her tribe from an alien Predator who is hunting them. The story is set in the 1800s. Patrick Aison, who was a writer/producer on Jack Ryan and Treadstone, is supplying the screenplay here.
The Predator franchise has had a rather inconsistent history, with the number of bad films almost equaling the number of good films it has produced. The original 1987 Predator starring Arnold Schwarznegger is an undeniable classic of the genre. The first follow-up, Predator 2 with Danny Glover, may not have been as good, but still had some things to recommend it.
An attempt to revive the franchise in the early 2000s by smashing it together with the studio’s moribund Alien franchise for two movies but the less said about those two films the better. Nimrod Antal tried a soft reboot of the franchise which saw a number of humans transported to an alien world to be hunted by the Predators. While not a terrible film it failed to set the box office on fire. Most recently, franchise creator Shane Black returned for 2018’s The Predator, but studio interference hobbled the film.
