Zack Snyder has set his next film project as part of his ongoing deal with Netflix – the science-fiction action pic Rebel Moon.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will center on –
[A] peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy [that] is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.
Rebel Moon has its origins in a pitch Snyder made to Lucasfilm a decade back when the company was first starting to develop Star Wars films that would lie outside of the main Skywalker family saga. Although the Hollywood Reporter states that the idea didn’t go any further at Lucasfilm beyond some initial talks, Snyder didn’t give up on the story. After briefly considering producing it as a TV series, Snyder moved on to develop it as an original story.
Well, “original” may be stretching things somewhat. If the above synopsis sounds somewhat familiar, it is probably because Rebel Moon is really nothing more than a riff off of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai. The Seven Samurai story proved to be so strong that it was easily translated to the Old West for the classic 1960 Hollywood western The Magnificent Seven. Noted exploitation producer Roger Corman would reset the story into a science-fiction context in 1980 with Battle Beyond The Stars.
