Now there’s another villain that Shazam and his superpowered siblings will be fighting when the superhero family returns to the big screen.
Variety is reporting that Elementary star Lucy Liu has been added to the cast of director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam: Fury Of The Gods, the sequel to his 2019 superhero film Shazam. Liu is set to play the villain Kalypso, the sister of the previously cast Helen Mirren’s villainous character Hespera.
According to the trade –
Like Mirren’s character Hespera, Liu’s Kalypso does not have an obvious counterpart in DC Comics. Both characters, however, are the daughters of the Greek god Atlas, who is one of the sources of Shazam’s powers.
The Shazam sequel is starting to shape up to be a villain heavy affair. Although it has not yet been confirmed, the original Shazam had an end credits scene which featured that film’s bad guy Dr. Sivana (played by Mark Strong) meeting up with comic book villain – and evil alien worm – Mr. Mind. It is not certain how this encounter will play into the what we are starting to see in terms of casting news like today’s.
The original Shazam starred Asher Angel as teenager Billy Batson who was gifted a magic word that transforms him into a grownup superhero played by Zachary Levi. By the end of the film, Billy learns how to share his powers with his foster siblings, enabling each o them to have superpowers like his.
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is scheduled to open on June 2, 2023.
