His Dark Materials has been renewed by HBO and the BBC for it’s third and final season.
The series is an adaption of the trilogy of young adult novels of the same name from Phillip Pullman. The show’s first season adapted the first book, The Golden Compass and the currently airing second season adapted the middle volume, The Subtle Knife. The upcoming season will adapt the final installment, The Amber Spyglass.
Dafne Keen stars as Lyra, a young girl who lives on an alternate Earth ruled by a religious order known as the Magisterium and where everyone is accompanied by a Daemon, an extension of their own soul made manifest as a talking animal. When her uncle Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), who was investigating a scientific phenomenon prohibited from being studied by the Magisterium, disappears, she follows him north towards towards a secret that could change her world. In the show’s just completed second season, Lyra finds a gateway between worlds and arrives at an abandoned city where she meets a young boy, Will (Amir Wilson), who has journeyed to the city from our Earth. Meanwhile, agents from the Magisterium continue to pursue her and her uncle.
The new season will most likely go into production later this spring for a fall airing.
