Netflix has decided not to renew their science-fiction/family drama Away.
The series stars Hillary Swank as astronaut Emma Green, the commander of the first crewed mission to Mars. But leaving her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) for the mission has created its own amount of issues that they must contend with over the distance between Earth and the Mars-bound spaceship.
The cancellations comes as a bit of a surprise considering the popularity of the show in the weeks since it was released on September 4th. According to Netflix’s own released figures the show spent a number weeks in the top 10 streaming viewership rankings, peaking at the number two position during its first full week of release.
But immediate viewership popularity is only one factor that comes into consideration for streaming services for when they decide whether or not to renew a series for another season. The streamer also weighs viewership overseas, how many new subscribers the series brings to the service and the show’s cost. Away is reportedly budgeted at $6 million per episode, making it one of the costlier Netflix series.
