Noah Centineo has joined the cast of Black Adam, the upcoming comic book adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson as the titular DC Comics antihero.
Centineo will be appearing in the movie as Albert Rothstein, aka the hero Atom Smasher, who has the power to alter his size and molecular density. A variation of the character already appeared on television in the second season of the CW’s The Flash.
Spinning out of the Shazam comics and last year’s feature film of the same name, Black Adam is an anti-hero who has similar strengths as Billy Batson’s superpowered alter-ego. Orihginally portrayed as a villain, more modern interpretations of the character treat him as someone who was once corrupted by his powers, but who is now attempting to find redemption. Part of that journey saw him as a member of the Justice Society, a superhero team that Atom Smasher was also a part of. The two initially don’t get along, but eventually develop a friendship, although Black Adam is a bad influence on Atom Smasher.
Jaume Collet-Sera, who directed Johnson in the upcoming The Jungle Cruise, is behind the camera for this film as well.
Given the two characters’ intertwining stories, it is not surprising to find out that Atom Smasher is part of the upcoming film. Presumably future casting will reveal whether more Justice Society characters will be part of the film or if their story arc will be streamlined down somewhat.
