Outlander fans got their first look at the upcoming new season of the series during the show’s panel at New York Comic Con earlier this evening. And even though the series is based on the popular historical fantasy romance series of books by Diana Gabaldon, all present were still cautious to not spill too many of the details for the upcoming season.
In attendance were series stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Duncan Lacroix, David Berry and Maria Doyle Kenned as well as executive producers Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis.
While not going into specifics, Balfe stated that the new season of Outlander will feature more of the thing that fans want the most – the ongoing relationship between her character Claire and Heughan’s Jamie will continue to grow.
“It’s so wonderful to be able to play a relationship that keeps growing and deepening, and that’s something you see this season,” Balfe stated. “The love they have for each other keeps expanding. It’s just their knowledge of each other and how intimately they know what’s going on inside each other.”
Moore and Davis indicated that the show’s other key relationship, Brianna and Roger’s, would be tested as Brianna still deals with the trauma of her being raped by the outlaw Stephen Bennet last season. Moore also promised that the world of the show would “open up a little bit more” and that Roger’s complicated relationship with his father-in-law Jamie would continue to be, well, complicated.
With the Season 5 premier still a bit of a ways off, the panel wasn’t able to present a surprise screening of the new season’s first episode, like it was able to last year for season 4. But they were able to premier the first teaser trailer for the new season. In it, as the embers that start the fire of the Revolutionary War are slowly kindled, we see Claire and Jamie discussing whether or not they would be safer in the future. Claire announces that “If I have to keep us safe here, time, space, history be damned.” We’ve seen what has happened before on the show when Claire has tried to fight and bend the flow of history, so she and Jamie will definitely have an uphill struggle.
Outlander Season 5 will premiere on February 16, 2020.
