Will Poulter has been cast in Amazon’s upcoming series based on author J R R Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle Earth as detailed in his Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit novels. He will be joining the already cast Australian actress Markella Kavenagh.
Variety broke the story, but Amazon has refused to comment.
Reports are giving Poulter’s character’s name as Beldor. But like Kavenagh’s reported character name of Tyra, the name Beldor does not actually appear in any of Tolkien’s writings. While it is possible that it is a name created for the series, Beldor most likely is a code name for whatever his character’s real name will be, which presumably could be a spoiler for what story they are planning to tell.
The untitled series is set in Middle Earth’s Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings which close out that land’s Third Age. It is a time when the Great Rings of Power, ruled over by Sauron’s One Ring, were first forged. The Second Age stretched a little over three thousand years and saw a great many things including the rise and fall of a great empire and the great war on which Elves and men fought to stop Sauron from conquering all of Middle Earth.
Writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay are showrunning the series for Amazon with director Juan Antonio (J.A.) Bayona set for the pilot.
