Shazam will be getting a second turn on the big screen. The superhero action-comedy starring Asher Angel and Zachery Levi will be getting a sequel. The Wrap is reporting that New Line has given the go ahead to screenwriter Henry Gayden to start work on a script for a follow up.
The news comes following the film’s $53.5 million domestic box office haul it’s opening weekend this past week. That weekend box office is up considerably over the initial estimates of $40 million that film was tracking for several weeks ago.
Angel stars as Billy Batson, a troubled runaway who is given great powers by an ancient wizard to turn into a super powered grown up played by Levi. Billy soon finds that he has to face off against the evil Thaddeus Sinava (Mark Strong), who is scheming to take his power away. Although the film ends on a definitive note, it does set up the possibility for a sequel in a scene that comes mid-way through the film’s closing credits. Additionally, Dwayne Johnson is set to star in Black Adam, whose titular character was also given the same powers that Billy Batson was, although they take him down a darker path.
