David Ayers’ Suicide Squad was a bit of a hot mess, no thanks in part due to a judicious amount of studio meddling through the production and post-production process. But a few good things still managed to shine through the murk, one of them being Viola Davis’s portrayal of Amanda Waller. So it is good news indeed to here that it is being reported that Davis will be returning for writer/director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Once thought to be a completely new, fresh start for the franchise within the greater DC Expanded Cinematic Universe, this new film is looking more like a soft reboot, keeping some elements while introducing new ones. Previously, Jai Courtney indicated that he would returning to the film to reprise his role of Digger Harkness, AKA Captain Boomerang.
Davis’s Waller is the head of the top secret organization Task Force X, which forces incarcerated super villains to participate in dangerous, possibly fatal, black ops operations in return for having their sentences reduced. Waller is a ruthless, and somewhat amoral, woman who will sacrifice just about anything, and anyone, to achieve her objectives in protecting the United States.
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
