David Harbour and Rachel Weisz are both reportedly in talks to appear in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Widow. The film will be the first headlining outing for the former assassin-turned-superhero played by Scarlett Johansson in a number of other Marvel Cinematic Universe installments.
The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive on Harbour while Variety broke the news about Weisz.
Neither report has any information on the characters the respective actors will be playing.
It is rumored that the film will in some way deal with how Natasha Romanoff was trained as a Soviet assassin before she broke away and became an agent of SHIELD, the Marvel Universe spy organization run by Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury.
A Black Widow film has been in development for a number of years, even before there was a Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being introduced in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, fans have been vocal about wanting to see the character get her own solo adventure. The project seemed to gain moment at Marvel once Jac Shaeffer was hired to write a new screenplay last year. Cate Shortland is set to direct.
