Just in case you missed it when the internet exploded last evening with the news that Jason Reitman had already written and will be directing a new Ghostbusters film that will serve as a sequel in some way to the original two comedy classics from the 1980s, along comes this teaser trailer to remind us all that it wasn’t some crazy shared dream we all had.
As is typical for a teaser, it doesn’t really show us much. But that could also be because there hasn’t been a frame of actual footage shot yet. Production starts this summer for a release sometime in 2020. But before that happens, Reitman, son of the original film’s director Ivan Reitman, will need to get his cast of new characters together and hopefully announce which of the original stars will be returning for this new outing.
I do like the idea of the teaser, though. It functions quite nicely as a metaphor for the fact that this project has been developed in secret, away from prying eyes, with Reitman working on the script with Gil Kenan, director of the animated film Monster House. Kenan might actually be this film’s secret weapon, more so than Reitman and his familial connection to the franchise. Monster House very effectively combined comedy and scares, a balance that will be integral component for any Ghostbusters film to succeed.
