Many Academy Award categories feature nominated films that most people have heard of. But there are always the few categories that specialize in films that don’t always get wide enough distribution to get recognized. The documentary categories – both short and feature length – often get called out for this. But another category that often has people scratching their heads over is Best Animated Short Film. If they are not attached to the front of a Pixar film or screened at a film festival, animated short films don’t get in front of many audiences. And that’s a shame as the ten films that are currently on the Academy’s shortlist prior to nomination show, there’s a wide variety of style and storytelling to be found in the medium. Fortunately this year, all ten of the animated shorts that are in contention for the five final nomination spots for Best Animated Short Film are available (for now) to watch online. So if you have yourself a couple of hours to spare sit back and enjoy some great animation that you don’t always get a chance to watch.
