One of the things that must be depressing to people who hate comic book films is that even now, over 20 years into the genre’s popularity, there is a wide, untapped spring of film worthy-properties just waiting for adaptations. One of the better ones, Black Hammer. is about to make the leap to TV and Film.
Deadline is reporting that Legendary Entertainment has optioned Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s creator-owned Dark Horse Comics series Black Hammer with the idea to adapt it to movies and television.
Black Hammer is a deconstruction of the superhero comic book genre which follows a team of heroes who are transported to a strange, off-kilter town called Rockwood after defeating their arch-nemesis. They series deals with the struggles of them trying to escape the city.
Lemire has expanded the original world of the series with a number of spin-off that fleshed out the Black Hammer universe. So, Legendary has acquired a pre-fab shared universe for them to conquer all media with.
Lemire is no stranger to having his comic book work adapted into other media. His The Underwater Welder is being adapted to film by Ryan Gosling and his Descender and Gideon Falls have been optioned to television.
