I am one of many who believe Idris Elba can play any role. Yes, even James Bond. But can he play a villainous cat named Macavity in an adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical? I guess we will soon find that out.
Deadline says that Elba is in final talks to join Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Cats. He will be joining Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, and James Corden in the film.
The article states that he will be playing Macavity, the villain of the show, who kidnaps the spiritual leader of the cats, Old Deuteronomy.
Cats is the fourth longest running musical in Broadway history and first opened in London’s West End in 1981. Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, the musical focuses in a tribe of cats called Jellicle on the eve of their yearly celebration of their selection of one of their number to enter a process of reincarnation.
Cats is set to hit theaters in December 20, 2019.
