Movie studios have been known to cast a wide net for graphic novels to adapt to the big screen, but typically the comic’s creators are relegated to only a thank you in the end credits. That’s not the case with God Country.
Legendary and Aftershock Media are developing a film based in the Image Comics book, God Country. The book’s author, Donny Cates, who created the series with artist Geoff Shaw, has been tapped to write the screen play.
Image Comics solicitations describe the series as such:
Emmet Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia, isn’t just a problem for his children—his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home—as well as the surrounding West Texas town—a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…
The series has received good reviews in the comic book community and has made Cates one of the most sought after creators working in comics. He has been given high-profile writing work at Marvel Comics on series such as Thanos, Venom and Death of the Inhumans.
No word as of yet on a release date and the search begins for a director as well.
