The Spider-Verse has gotten a bit more weird, if the latest trailer for Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is any indication.
We already knew that the film would center on the Miles morales version of the character and team him up with a few of the other alternate versions of Spider-Man, including original recipe wallcrawler Peter Parker. But this new trailer shows us just how deep into the Spider-Man mythos (and 60 years of comics) directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman are willing to go.
In case it was apparent from the trailer, Spider-Ham – aka Peter Porker – is from an alternate universe of anthropomorphic funny animal characters. He was created back in 1983 by Tom DeFalco and Mark Armstrong and had sporadic appearances over the years, but did show up in the Marvel Zombies and Secret Wars events. Peni Parker is a Japanese middle school student who pilots a mech suit known as SP///dr and is the Spider-Man variant for her home alternate dimension.
Adding in Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man Noir, we now have six verions of Spider-Man (Spider-Person?) set to appear in this film. And I have a sneaking suspicion that there may be more that the studio is hiding from us right now.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14.
