If you have been concerned about Todd Phillips’ Joker film not having many close ties to the Batman mythos, well, here’s some news that might put those fears to rest.
Deadline and others are reporting that Oscar nominated, Emmy and Golden Globe winning actor Alec Baldwin. Has joined the the cast of Phillips’ film. Sources say he has been cast as Thomas Wayne, father to Bruce Wayne, a.k.a The Batman.
If this is true, it raises so many interesting questions. In the comics and in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha were killed by an anonymous burglar named Joe Chill. Their murders, as we all well know, motivated young Bruce to become the Batman.
However, in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, the murder of the elder Waynes’ was committed by a young Jack Napier, years before he eventually became the Joker.
So, will Thomas Wayne leave this film alive? If not, will he be killed by the. Joker (Joaquin Phoenix)? And if so, will this film be a backdoor Batman origin film? And in particular, a prequel to Burton’s film? Or will he just be a philanthropist who crosses paths with Phoenix’s character? Let the debates begin!
Joker opens on October 4, 2019.
