Well, if there’s any question as to whether Sony’s upcoming Men In Black film is a continuation of the franchise that previously starred Will Smith and Tommy lee Jones as agents of a shadowy organization that oversaw aliens hidden among the human population of Earth or an out-and-out remake, it has been answered today. Emma Thompson, who portrayed Smith and Lee’s characters’ boss in 2012’s Men In Black 3 has been announced as returning to the franchise to once again play Agent O.
This time around, Thompson’s character will be overseeing a different pair of MIB agents – Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Nothing else has been revealed about the film’s plot although given the usual franchise parameters it will involve aliens and a fair bit of slapstick comedy.
Also joining the cast are Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall.
Shooting is set to start in London in the next couple of days with Fate Of The Furious director F. Gary Gray behind the camera calling the shots. The studio is hoping that the film will revitalize the franchise which launched when the original 1997 film was a surprise blockbuster hit. A sequel followed in 2002 and it was a decade before the third installment, which introduced Thompson’s character, hit theaters.
The currently untitled film is set for a June 14, 2019 release.
