Miles Teller has landed a coveted role in the upcoming Top Gun 2. Teller will be playing the son of the first film’s fighter pilot “Goose” played by Anthony Edwards.
In the original film, Goose was the wingman of Tom Cruise’s fighter pilot Maverick. When Maverick is killed in an accident, Maverick blames himself and has to overcome his guilt to get back in the cockpit.
This sequel will see Cruise’s Maverick as an instructor in the Navy’s top gun program as the military transitions from jet fighters to combat drones. The film is set to be directed by Cruise’s Oblivion helmer Joseph Kosinski. The late Tony Scott directed the 1986 original.
Teller reportedly beat out the other two finalists in the casting search – Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell – for the role after all three screen tested with Criose last week. Dylan O’Brien and Austin Butler were among those reported up for the role but who were cut from consideration earlier.
Truth be told, while I definitely feel that Teller is a great actress, I don’t see much of a resemblance between him and Edwards. If anything I see more of a similarity between Teller and Cruise, which I suppose could make for an interesting plot twist.
Production is expected to start soon for a July 12, 2019 release.
