Alex Garland’s highly talked about spec script, The Toymaker’s Secret, has been bought by TriStar Pictures. The haunted house project has Paloma Baeza set to direct. Baeza comes from a background in animation having won both a BAFTA and Annie award for her short Poles Apart which featured the voice of Helena Bonham Carter.
According to Variety –
The Toymaker’s Secret tells the story of an American family who moves into an old Victorian home in London and begins to believe that it might be haunted.
The trade also notes that while Garland’s most recent films – Ex Machina and Annihilation which he also directed – The Toymaker’s Secret will be more “family-focused” than his adult-oriented science fiction features.
Fans of the writer/directors work should know that this looks like the only big screen project of his for the foreseeable future. Garland recently received a pilot order from FX for the series Devs which he had been developing. That show will also stay in the science-fiction realm, focusing on a computer engineer who begins to suspect that the cutting-edge tech company she works for may ve responsible for her boyfriend’s disappearance.
