Joss Whedon Leaves BATGIRL: “I…Failed.”

Good news for all the Zack Snyder fans mad at Joss Whedon for “ruining” JUSTICE LEAGUE–he will not be “ruining” BATGIRL.

The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive that Whedon would be walking away from the project after almost one year of working on it.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?

It must have been tough to write a story featuring Batgirl in the DC Extended Universe. Her origin is tied to Batman and Batman in the DCEU is an enigma in the current continuity. I’m sure Whedon ran into problems as to what he could or couldn’t reveal about Batman’s past and then trying to insert Barbara Gordon into it.

No replacement team has been announced as of yet. Warners has a number of other DCEU projects in the works, so perhaps this one will go on the back burner until the franchise moves forward in other directions.
