The Queen of Soul is finally getting her own movie.
The untitled film, which has been in the work for several years has been picked up by MGM. Based on Franklin’s memoir, Aretha: From These Roots, the film attached Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson to the project in 2015. In 2016 Franklin said that she had given approval to one actress, in particular, though she she remained coy as to whom it was.
Hudson, who started out on television’s American Idol, and whilst she was cut from the competition, went on the win an Oscar for her performance of Effie White in the 2006 movie musical Dreamgirls. Ever since then she has not come down from the clouds, knocking out performances in The Secret Life of Bees, The Colour Purple on Broadway, and Hairspray Live. She has also had quite the music career as well, with three albums under her belt thus far.
Scott Bernstein (Straight Outta Compton) and music producer Harvey Mason (Sing, Pitch Perfect) are slated to produce.
