The black private dick whose a sex machine for all the chicks is returning to the big screen in 2019. New Line Cinema has set a June 19, 2019 release date for a new Shaft film featuring Samuel L Jackson based on the character created by novelist Ernest Tidyman and originally portrayed by Richard Roundtree.
According to The Wrap, “Shaft’s straight-laced FBI agent son reluctantly pull[s] in his renegade dad on a case.” The studio has described the film as a “passing of the torch” with Jessie T. Usher starring as the next generation of the crime fighting family. Barbershop‘s Tim Story is directing with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris providing the screenplay.
People have erroniously called the Jackson-starring Shaft a remake, when in fact it wasn’t. The character was actually the nephew of the original John Shaft character played by Richard Roundtree in three movies and a short-lived television series in the 1970s. Roundtree also had a cameo in the 2000 movie.
