In news that should surprise no one, Fox is developing a spin-off for Dafne Keen’s Laura character from Logan, known in the comics as X-23. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story in an post-mortem of the March film, one which acts as a kick-off for an Oscar campaign for actor Patrick Stewart.
Not much is known about the project as of yet, except that Logan director James Mangold is kicking around script ideas for the project and Hugh Jackman will not be returning, not even in the role of a producer. “No, I won’t be a producer on a Laura sequel,” Jackman says. “But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it though. She is just phenomenal.”
I think the least Fox could do is throw a couple free passes his way or invite him to the premiere so he doesn’t have to line up, but what do I know.
Laura is a child created from Logan’s DNA with the intent on becoming a living weapon. She is snuck out of the lab and Logan is hired to deliver her to a mutant refuge in North Dakota. During the travels, the pair develop sort of a father/daughter relationship.
This is a no brainer for Fox, which is actively trying to expand its Marvel X-films out into a shared universe. Laura was one of the best parts of Logan, and I, for one, would be interested in seeing her story continue.
More on this as it develops.
