There was chatter a few months back that Warner Brothers was contemplating an Academy Awards campaign for the summer superhero hit Wonder Woman. While the film was both a critical and box office hit, it did seem as if the studio was perhaps caught up in the excitement of the public’s reaction to the film.
Well, for Warner Brothers brass, it appears as if that excitement hasn’t settled down. The studio has launched its Academy Awards “For Your Consideration” site and Wonder Woman is prominently featured. Among the fifteen of the twenty-four Oscar categories that the studio would like Academy members consider nominating the film for include Best Picture, Best Director for Patty Jenkins and Best Actress for Gal Gadot.
It looks as if Warners is looking at promoting a good portion of their genre material for possible Oscar nominations. In addition to Wonder Woman, the studio is also featuring Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk and The Lego Batman Movie.
So does the film have a chance? It is still way too early to say. If anything, it should be a contender in some of the technical categories. Though if any Warner Brothers film is going to get a nomination for Best Cinematography it is going to be Blade Runner 2049‘s Roger Deakins.
The Oscar race is only beginning…
