Remember when X-Men: Apocalypse came out and Jennifer Lawrence claimed that she was done playing mutant, shape-shifting villain Mystique? Well, Lawrence is hoping that you don’t. But if you have and you’re wondering why she is back for the currently shooting X-Men: Dark Phoenix, she’s got an answer for you.
Speaking with Digital Spy, the actress divulged her reasons for returning the superhero franchise for a fourth installment.
My contract was up, I didn’t have to do another one, but if I didn’t do another one, what would her story be? I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, ‘I don’t want to do another X-Men!’ And then I just never show up and everyone’s very confused about the Mystique they’ve been following for the last three films.
And I am sure that whatever her agent was able to negotiate in a new contract for her appearance had nothing to do with it.
