There has been a bit of a shakeup in the cast for Fox’s upcoming X-Men franchise installment New Mutants.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rosario Dawson has dropped out of the project, with Alice Baga stepping into her role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a mutant who has the power to create a protective “bio-field” around herself. There is no reported explanation for the change up.
The project is set to start filming in Boston next month with Josh Boone directing. While drawing from 1980s fan favorite storylines from comics creators Chris Claremont, Bob McLeod and Bill Sienkiewicz, the movie will reportedly have a more horror film tone to it than the regular X-Men franchise films. This is part of the studio’s plans to have their X-Men spin-off films standout from the main line of features. Deadpool’s comedic bent didvery well fort he studio and it is betting that other genre mashups will also excite ticket buyers.
The cast will feature Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt as five young mutants who must band together to escape the research lab where they are being held against their will.
Fans looking to see Dawson in a Marvel Comics-based property still have the actress playing Claire Templeton in the Netflix’s interconnected Marvel Shows – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.
