New Releases: May 4, 2017

The new releases only number one this week, but it’s a doozy.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (Disney, 4,347 Theaters, 136 Minutes, Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language, and brief suggestive content, Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer at press time: 84% Fresh [202 reviews]): The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a risky venture. The team wasn’t even all that well known among comic book collectors, and was a total mystery to the general population. It was helmed by James Gunn, who rose out of the ranks of schlock horror, but not very far out of it. It wasn’t supposed to be good. It turned out to be one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It goes without saying that any sequel would be eagerly anticipated. And it is. This time around, Gunn & company introduce a whole lot more of Marvel’s cosmic folk, a plot focused on family, and a much bigger team.

It would be nigh impossible to screw this up, and it looks like they didn’t. Join me and the millions of other fans who are going to see it this weekend.

Next week, King Arthur tried to take a sword out of a rock, and Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn take a vacation only to get taken themselves.
