In today’s biggest piece of “No duh” news, James Gunn will be writing and directing Marvel Studio’s Guardians OF The Galaxy Vol 3.
Not really much of a surprise considering Gunn has been the guiding force of the franchise for its first two installments. The first film was a surprise hit for the studio and the second, which opens next month, is showing signs of possibly surpassing the original’s box office take.
Gunn made the announcement himself on his Facebook page today, wanting to answer this particular topic before it is asked of him numerous times on his upcoming press junket to promote Volume 2. In his announcement, embedded below, Gunn talks briefly about want to be sure he was taking on a third film because he felt he “needed to do it.” He also notes that he is keenly aware that the third film in a superhero trilogy isn’t always the best and is going to work hard to insure that doesn’t happen this time around.
As to when this next film will come out, Gunn offers no specific time frame. He does state that it will be after The Avengers: Infinity War, placing it in the expected Phase 4 of Marvel Studio’s ongoing film plans. Or in other words, 2020 at the earliest.
In the past, Gunn has stated that his corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been pretty much isolated from the plotlines of the other interconnected movies. We know that is due to change with rumors circulating that some of the Guardians will show up in next fall’s The Avengers: Infinity War and the still untitled fourth Avengers film due in 2018. Gunn states that he is working with Marvel to help set up the franchise for where it may go beyond the end of his current trilogy of films.
Well, this week we start the U.S. press junket, before traveling to Europe at the end of the week. Of course I know some…
