Dolph Lundgren has signed on to Warner Brothers’ Aquaman, one of the films in their DC Comics Extended Universe film franchise of comic book adaptations.
The Hollywood Reporter states that the former Rocky IV strongman will be playing King Nereus of the aquatic kingdom of Xebel. With star Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, aka Arthur Curry, the king of the submerged city of Atlantis, the two will be coming into conflict. As the Reporter notes, “[Nerues] wants to kill Aquaman.”
This won’t be Lundgren’s first villainous turn in a DC Comics-based property. He is currently appearing on this season’s Green Arrow series Arrow as a Russian mobster.
Nerues won’t be the only adversary that Aquaman will be dealing with in the film. Patrick Wilson is co-starring in the film as Orm, aka Ocean Master, Arthur’s half-brother and someone intent on claiming the throne of Atlantis for himself. Additionally, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast as the classic Aquaman villain Black Manta.
Rounding out the cast of Aquaman are Amber Heard as Mera, Aquaman’s royal consort, Willem Dafoe as Aquaman’s chief adviser, Dr. Vulko, Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother and Temuera Morrison is Aquaman’s father.
Director James Wan is currently working at getting the film ready to go in front of cameras next month in Australia.
Aquaman is currently set for a December 21, 2018 release.
