New MUMMY Trailer Unwraps Titular Monster’s Origins

“Because of your actions, this ancient power has returned.”

So accuses Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyl to Tom Cruise’s soldier-of-fortune Nick Morton in the just released trailer for Universal’s The Mummy. And who, eaactly this ancient power is is revealed within the trailer below. The new clip gives us some of the backstory of Sofia Boutella’s Ahmanet, both in how she was imprisoned in Ancient Egypt and how she became free in modern times. It is pretty standard stuff in terms of Mummy movies, so it will be up to director Alex Kurtzman to really make this film one worth seeing this summer. And hopefully, he will be bringing the goods as The Mummy is being positioned to be the lead film of UNiversal’s planned shared cinematic universe of monster films.

Here’s the studio’s official synopsis –

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy Opens June 9.
