LA LA LAND Leads Oscars With 6 Wins, MOONLIGHT Takes Home Best Picture

La La Land, a musical about pursuing one’s dreams, made a number of dreams come true at this year’s Academy Awards. The film, which was nominated in a record-tying 14 categories, snagged the Oscar statue in six of those categories including Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Original Song and Original Score. Chazelle’s win places him as the youngest person to be awarded an Oscar in the Best Director category.

But it was the drama Moonlight which took home the top prize of Best Picture. It was a nice bookend to the evening as Mahershala Ali started off the night with his win for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film. Moonlight also won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight also swept the Independent Spirit Awards the previous evening.

Casey Affleck took home the award for Best Actor for his work in the drama Manchester By The Sea just one day after he won a similar honor at the Independent Spirit Awards. The film also won Best Screenplay.

Zootopia won the Best Animated Feature Academy Award in a year that featured a number of strong nominees in the category. While Disney’s PIXAR division did not have a feature film in nomination this year, it did win the Oscar for Best Animated Short with Piper.

Costume Designer Colleen Atwood took home her fourth Academy Award. The win tied her with Charles LeMaire and Milena Canonero, but still keeps her shy of the record-breaking eight wins racked up by the iconic Edith Head.

Despite the controversies over its origins as a television project and its length, OJ: Made In America won the Best Documentary Feature.
