Production has officially gotten underway on Lucasfilm’s untitled young Han Solo Star Wars spin off film today and it was co-director Chris Miller who let us know it in this tweeted picture –

Of course, there’s no real info about the film itself beyond what we already know. Hail Caesar!‘s Alden Ehrenreich will be playing the younger version of Harrison Ford’s iconic space pirate Han Solo, with Community‘s Donald Glover is co-starring as young Lando Calrissian, the dashing conman played by Billy Dee Williams in the original Star Wars trilogy. Woody Harrelson also co-stars as an unnamed character who will be something of a mentor figure to Han. Emilia Clarke rounds out the known cast in an unknown role.
Miller is co-directing with his collaborator Phil Lord and if anything, Miller’s joke suggests that they prefer the pre-Special Edition of Solo as someone who could very likely kill in cold blood and not the one whose hard edges were softened somewhat by having him shoot Greedo in self-defense. Will this film be a somewhat grittier story than the main Star Wars saga is? It’s hard to say, but considering how well received the darker Rogue One was, I don’t see Lucasfilm shying away from the idea.
The Untitled Han Solo spinoff film is scheduled for a May 25, 2018 release.
