Taron Egerton’s Robin Hood will be meeting his match against Ben Mendelsohn as the actor has signed on to play the villainous Sherrif Of Nottingham in Lionsgate’s Robin Hood: Origins.
The studio seems to be landing Mendelsohn at just the right time. If early reviews are anything to go by, the actor’s status is about to shoot up this weekend with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which he plays another villain, Imperial officer Orson Krennic.
In addition to Egerton as the titular legendary outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor, the cast for Robin Hood: Origins also includes Jamie Foxx as Little John and Eve Hewson as Maid Marion. Otto Bathurst is directing from a script by Joby Harold.
Over the past couple of years there have been a number of Robin Hood projects in various stages of development around Hollywood. Sony has shown interest in developing a “shared universe” type of film series starting with Hood from writers Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott while Disney has been working on a more family friendly take called Nottingham & Hood. Warner Brothers also has a version in development from Gangster Squad and Aquaman writer Will Beall.
