DEADPOOL 2: Domino Shortlist Includes Winstead, Miller, Caplan

deadpool-2-domino-comicsSo, it looks like Domino will really be in Deadpool 2 and Fox wants to make sure they have the best actress to play the mutant probability manipulator. Collider reports that there are ten, count ’em, ten actresses on the not-so shortlist for the role.

Here is your scorecard for the actresses Fox is looking at:

Sophia Boutella

Age:deadpool-2-sophia-boutella 34

Country of Origin: Algeria

Where you might know her from: Boutella is a hip-hop dancer who has appear in music videos from Madonna, Ne-Yo and Rihanna.

Geek Cred: She gain prominence playing Gazelle in the comic book adaptation, Kingsman: The Secret Service and played the alien who protects Scotty in this year’s Star Trek Beyond.

Thoughts: Her training as a gymnast proves she has the athleticism for the role, and she has proven that she can kick ass on-screen with the best of them. And Star Trek Beyond shows she’s comfortable wearing black and white make-up.

Where we’ll see her next: She will be playing the titular character in next year’s The Mummy remake.

Lizzy Caplan

deadpool-2-lizzy-caplanAge: 34

Country of Origin: United States

Where you might know her from: Caplan is currently starring in the Showtime series Masters of Sex and has appeared in Mean Girls and this year’s Now You See Me 2

Geek Cred: She was one of the stars on Cloverfield, the time-travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, guested on Smallville and played one of the thieves in the first Marvel One-Shot, Item 47.

Thoughts: She is arguable the best actress on the list (she has an Emmy nomination for her excellent work on Masters of Sex) and would probably bring the most to the role.

Where we’ll see her next: She’ll be appearing in the forthcoming Allied.

Mackenzie Davis

deadpool-2-mackenzie-davisAge: 29

Country of Origin: Canada

Where you might know her from: Davis is currently starring in AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire and had a role in The Martian.

Geek Cred: She has been cast in Blade Runner 2049

Thoughts: Davis was one of the first actresses to be linked with role (we reported she was a candidate back in August). Seeing their pictures so close together, I’m noticing she looks a lot like Lizzy Caplan. I’d say the mutant shapeshifter Copycat might be making an appearance, if not for her alter ego already have been introduced in the person of Morena Baccarin in the first film.

Where we’ll see her next: She is currently filming the titular role of the next Diablo Cody/Jason Reitman collaboration, Tully.

Eve Hewson

deadpool-2-eve-hewsonAge: 25

Country of Origin: Ireland

Where you might know her from: She appears as a regular on the Cinemax series, The Knick, but, let’s face it, her biggest claim to fame is being the daughter of international pop-star and lead singer of u2, Bono

Geek Cred: She has been cast as Maid Marian in next year’s Robin Hood: Origins.

Thoughts: She may be the youngest of the actresses on the list, but she has an interesting resume of roles to her credit already. This could be a role that helps her shake-off the shackles of being known as Bono’s Daughter.

Where we’ll see her next: More episodes of The Knick and Robin Hood: Origins.

Sylvia Hoeks

deadpool-2-sylvia-hoeksAge: 33

Country of Origin: Netherlands

Where you might know her from: Unless you are a big fan of Dutch cinema, you are probably not at all familiar with Hoeks. She is a member of the cast of the recently debuting Epix show, Berlin Station.

Geek Cred: Hoeks, like Davis, has been cast in Blade Runner 2049.

Thoughts: Sadly, since I am not an expert in Dutch cinema, I have no idea what Hoeks has to offer. However, Berlin Station has a great cast and if she is part of it, she must have a lot on the ball.

Where we’ll see her next: Episodes of the first season Berlin Station, currently airing on Epix.

Sienna Miller

deadpool-2-sienna-millerAge: 34 (35 on December 28th)

Country of Origin: Born in the United States, raised in the United Kingdom.

Where you might know her from: Miller has had the most prolific career of any of the actresses on the list, having been working since her early 20s. Notable films include Layer Cake, Foxcatcher, American Sniper, and Burnt.

Geek Cred: Miller is no stranger to the skin-tight bodysuit, having played the Baroness in 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. She also had a role in the adaptation of the Neil Gaiman/Charles Vess graphic novel, Stardust.

Thoughts: While I wouldn’t call myself a fan, Miller does bring arguably more star power than the other actresses.

Where we’ll see her next: She is starring in the upcoming The Lost City of Z.

Kelly Rohrbach

deadpool2-kelly-rohrbachAge: 26

Country of Origin: United States

Where you might know her from: You’ll most likely recognize her if you read Sports Illustrated from her appearances in their annual swimsuit issue. She also had a recurring role on the TV show Rizzoli & Isles.

Geek Cred: The closest thing I can come up with is that she was a star of the CW Seed’s parody of ghost hunting shows, P.E.T. Squad Files.

Thoughts: Rohrbach is a rare case of a wannabe actress becoming a model becoming a actress again. Someone in Hollywood likes her, because she is starting to get higher profile roles.

Where we’ll see her next: She will be playing C.J. Parker, the role made famous by Pamela Anderson, in the big screen Baywatch adaptation.

Ruby Rose

deadpool-2-ruby-roseAge: 30

Country of Origin: Australia

Where you might know her from: Her most famous role to date is on the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black.

Geek Cred: She has played a robot on the SyFy show, Dark Matter and will be appearing in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Thoughts: Rose is one of those “overnight sensations” that actually spent years and years building up her career. She started out as a model in her native Australia, parlaying that into becoming a VJ on their MTV, to working in TV and film. For what it’s worth, I think she looks the most like the character out of all of the candidates.

Where we’ll see her next: In addition to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Rose has rolls in two other high-profile sequels, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2.

Stephanie Sigman

deadpool-2-stephanie-sigmanAge: 29

Country of Origin: Mexico

Where you might know her from:She has appeared in Spectre and was a series regular in Netflix’s Narcos.

Geek Cred: Well, she was a “Bond girl,” which gives her a whole lot of credit with 007 fans.

Thoughts: Like Rose and Hoeks, she made a name for herself in her native land on Mexican TV and in Mexican films. She has been making strides in the U.S. primarily on TV. This could be a way for her to make the transition to films here as well.

Where we’ll see her next: She will be playing a nun in next year’s Annabelle 2.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

deadpool-2-mary-elizabeth-winsteadAge: 31

Country of Origin: United States.

Where you might know her from: Winstead has developed a career as a modern-day scream queen with roles in horror themed films such as Final Destination 3, Black Christmas, Death Proof, The Thing (2011), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and 10 Cloverfield Lane and horror-tinged TV shows such as The Returned and BrainDead. She has also appeared in less-scary fare such as Smashed and Live Free or Die Hard.

Geek Cred: If being a scream queen wasn’t enough cred, she has also appeared in Sky High, and as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Thoughts: Winstead is one of my favorite actresses and I’m rooting for her here. I think her skills with action films with a sense of humor would make her an excellent fit for this role.

Where we’ll see her next: She will be joining the cast of FX’s Fargo next year.

What does these candidates tell us about the role? Well, they are casting their net wide, going after underappreciated veterans and relative novices. Most are age appropriate to play a well travelled mercenary and each could bring something unique to the role. We shall see which or these women, if any, end up with the job.
