We already knew Cable would be in Deadpool 2. Deadpool himself told us so at the end of the first film. And if Cable’s going to be there, chances were good that Domino was going to follow him. Well, it looks like both of them will be in there and the people rumored to play them have people going “hmm.”
The scoop comes from Jeff Sneider from his recent visit to the Meet the Movie Press podcast. This is what he had to say:
“People were talking about Cable from Deadpool 2. There’s been a name floating around for Cable for months. Hasn’t changed. Don’t know if its changed. Didn’t make any calls about this. This was just the name that has been out there for months. So take this with a gigantic grain of salt. The biggest grain of salt your tiny little brain can imagine. The name that is floating around for Cable right now is Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler. The name for Domino, who is said to be the scene-stealer of the movie, is Mackenzie Davis.”
So, Chandler’s been associated with Cable for months, but we have to take things with a grain of salt. Right,
In a world where everyone from Mel Gibson to Stephen Lang has been attached to the role, the news that Kyle Chandler has been in the running for months can be quite shocking. I’m not that shocked. I’ve been a fan of Chandler’s ever since his Early Edition days. He has had a number of leads over the years in TV shows such as Friday Night Lights and, most recently, the Netflix series, Bloodline. However, on the big screen, he has been relegated to supporting roles in films such as King Kong, Super 8 , Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and Carol. There’s a quite a bit of blockbusters and Oscar-worthy films on that list.
Cable is a soldier from the future who is fighting technological virus that threatens to consume his flesh and replace it with machinery. He has come back to fight his clone, Stryfe, and Apocalypse. While back in our time, he has trained members of the New Mutants and turned them into the paramilitary mutant team known as X-Force. Oh, and he is the son of Cyclops and Madeline Pryor, a clone of Jean Grey who passed on her telekinetic powers onto Cable. And that is the world of comic books in the 1990’s in a nutshell.
As you can see, the character was immensely popular in the comics, and had connection with a lot of properties that Fox is bringing to the big screen. This might be what give the 50-year-old Chandler an advantage over the much older Gibson and Lang.
In the comics, Domino is Cable’s main lieutenant, second in command, and trusted ally. She also is his lover, because, well, comics can’t really get away from that sort of thing. Her time as a mercenary gave her excellent fighting and weapon skills, all aided by her mutant probability manipulation powers. In other words, she is a walking good luck charm in a skin-tight leather bodysuit.
Mackenzie Davis’ resume isn’t rich as Chandler’s but she is definitely what you’d call an up-and-comer. The Canadian actress was featured in The Martian as NASA technician Mindy Park and is one of the leads in the AMC TV show, Halt and Catch Fire. In addition to Deadpool 2, she has the untitled Blade Runner sequel on her plate, in which she will be playing an as yet unnamed role.
Regardless of who is playing them, the inclusion of Cable and Domino in Deadpool 2 means that we are at least two steps closer to the long-in-development X-Force movie. Should be interesting to see if Chandler, Davis or whoever get enough films on their contracts to cover that film as well.
Deadpool 2 is set for a 2018 release.
