With less than two weeks to go to the release of Warner Brothers’ Suicide Squad, it seems odd that the studio would be releasing a brand new trailer for the film. Online excitement and box office tracking for the film seem to be running high, so promoting the film to the crowd at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H certainly seems like preaching to the choir at this point. But they did it anyway.
Interestingly, the new trailer does give us some new shades of characterization to some of the supervillains that have been forced to work together as a special ops team by the government. It certainly gives a new and darker context to the bar scene we’ve seen in previous trailers.
Disappointingly, the trailer does suggest that the films’ finale is going to involve something shooting a dangerous bright light into the sky. This is a trope in comic book adaptations we are mostly moving away from, but to see it here is a bit disheartening. Still though, they say that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination and the new glimpses of the Squad combined with what we have seen before lend themselves to that.
Suicide Squad opens August 5.
