Giant robots and monsters will go at it again on February 23, 2018, as that is the date that Universal has set for Pacific Rim 2.
Previously, the studio had roped off April 7, 2017 and then August 4, 2017 for the announced sequel to director Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 big budget science-fiction film, though various issues forced them to push back those dates. Production is set to start later this year in the fall, with new Star Wars trilogy star John Boyega set to star and Steven S. DeKnight to direct.
No other film has staked out that for release yet, but the date has its good an bad points. On the upside, it is coming just over two months after Star Wars: Episode VIII which features Boyega and the excitement for that film could carryover to Pacific Rim 2. However, the film is slotted right in the middle of two Marvel Studios superhero films – Black Panther on February 16 and an untitled Fox/Marvel pic on March 2, which is heavily speculated to be Deadpool 2. Additionally, Warner has their own monster film coming on March 2, the prehistoric shark movie Meg.
