When Bruce Willis was cast as the lead in the Death Wish remake, fans raised some concerns, as they believed the part would be better served without an action star in the lead role. I can only imagine what they will think about this piece of news.
Deadline is reporting that Eli Roth has taken over the director’s chair on the MGM/Paramount co-production, replacing Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado.
Roth, most known for gorefests such as Cabin Fever, Hostel and The Green Inferno, might lead fans to believe that we’ll be getting some torture porn version of the story. While that might be interesting in and of itself, Roth has been making the move into less gory, more studio friendly fare, notably with last year’s thriller, Knock Knock. And this will be the first feature film he is directing without writing the film himself. He will direct a script written by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski.
Personally, with the talent involved, I don’t think this situation requires a “Chicken Little” level panic. I’m cautiously optimistic we might just end up with a remake that adds something to the original concept.
