SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 Producer Confirms Shooting May Start This Fall

Robert Downey Jr recently revealed that a third Sherlock Holmes film, in which he would again star as the iconic Victorian-era sleuth, could begin production this coming fall. Now franchise producer JOel Silver is confirming that possibility.

Speaking with Collider while doing the publicity rounds for The Nice Guys, Silver stated that a script is ready for Sherlock Holmes 3 and it is looking as if Downey and co-star Jude Law’s schedules will both have openings in the latter part of the year that would allow them to get back in front of the camera.

It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done. We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.

The script that they have is by Drew Pearce, who was hired back in 2011, two months before the second installment, A Game Of Shadows, was released in theaters. (James Coyne has since recently done a rewrite on it.) And given that it has now been almost five years since that happened, might this third installment be a conclusion to Downey Jr., Law and director Guy Ritchie’s interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic characters? Silver dowsn’t think so.

I hope [it’s not the last one]. I don’t think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. It’s not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It’s [the actor’s] call. They have to say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go.’ I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done.

The window that all are looking at is indeed fairly narrow. We know that production begins on The Avengers: Infinity War – Part One, or whatever it will wind up being called, in November, so Downeys’ JANuary report time for the film is pretty much etched in stone. Ritchie is currently in post-production for Knights Of The Round Table: King Arthur. Is there time fort hem to squeeze in Sherlock Holmes 3? We’ll see.
