Gael Garcia Bernal is getting ready to swashbuckle as the actor has signed to play Zorro in the upcoming film Z.
The film is writer/director Jonas Cuaron’s futuristic take on the classic pulp hero of old Spanish California.
The character was originally created back in 1919 by Johnston McCulley and has been featured in numerous films from silents to Saturday afternoon matinee serials to big blockbusters over the years.
Bernal is a good call here. The Zorro character of course needs to be commanding and charismatic, with a touchy of cheekiness, all things that Bernal has brought to his character of orchestra conductor Rodrigo in Amazon’s Mozart In The Jungle. Cauron and Bernal have worked together previously on the thriller Desierto.
Z is being developed by 20th Century Fox, but has not yet been scheduled for a release.
