There’s nothing fans would want more than to have Nathan Fillion play a superhero. Well, it looks like he will be playing one in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, albeit probably not in the was we all hoped.
Pictures taken during a set visit that was floating around the Internet and picked up by Comicbook.com and others shows that there will be a scene in the film set on Earth, and it will be in a town that is having a Simon Williams film festival. The pictures are embedded below:
Savvy comic book fans will recognize that name as the alter ego of the villain turned hero Wonder Man, a man filled with “ionic” energy which gives him superstrength, invulnerability and could be harnessed to allow him to fly. He also is a stunt man turned actor, and it appears that his acting career is much better in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than in the comics. In the comics, he was lucky to get a role at all, in the MCU he’s getting roles that would have gone to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender, and Jim Carrey (Ryan Reynolds? Any actor that starred in a romantic comedy in recent years?).
While Wonder Man is one of my favorite characters of all time, I have to temper my excitement just a little bit. Odds are this is just an in-joke by James Gunn in order to give fans an Easter Egg and Fillion another role in film he directed (Fillion has had at least a cameo in every full-length feature Gunn has directed). Movie posters are the perfect place for these kind of jokes (as fans of TV’s The Flash about why “Blue Devil” is playing in every cinema they come across in the series) and Fillion is still committed to the Castle TV series, which takes away any commitment larger than a cameo.
However, if they ever want to bring Wonder Man into the MCU proper, they will have to cast Fillion now. So, we got that going for us, which is nice.

Is his catchphrase going to be “My penis is a wonder!”?
