I wonder who is in charge with casting the Spider-Man reboot, Marvel or Sony? Because this choice could have gone either way.
Deadline is reporting that Zendaya has been cast in the forthcoming reboot in a lead role. She will be playing a character named Michelle.
Her role is described by Deadline as a lead, which would lead one to believe she’d be playing the love interest to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man. While it would be interesting to see the reboot eschew either Gwen or Mary Jane for a character lower on the depth chart as Spidey’s paramour, the only “Michele ” on the list is Michele Gonzales, a more recent addition to the Spider-Man mythos. Tthe character was never a true girlfriend of Peter Parker, just a roommate with benefits, with a love/hate relationship with Pete that is more often on the hate side of the equation. But the whole relationship is a bit more mature than you’d see in a kid-friendly Marvel film.
Of course, Variety states the part is neither a girlfriend nor a lead, although her screen presence will grow with every film in the franchise. So, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Zendaya has sprung from the factory where Disney creates all their teen actors, and has starred in low of the Disney Channel’s more annoying shows, Shake It Up! and K.C. Undercover. No one of the better actresses on the Disney lot, yet not the worst. Also, like many other Disney stars, she has a budding singing career in the works.
The Spider-Man reboot will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
